Kappa Theta Chapter of WIU
Kappa Theta Local History: The Kappa Theta Chapter of Theta Xi was founded on July 10, 1949 as a chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa. Our chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa was the first greek organization on campus to allow minorities to join. As a result of the merger of 1962, the chapter became a chapter of Theta Xi.
The first house of Theta Xi at Western Illinois University was located at 216 N. Sherman Drive . It was purchased in the year 1968. In 1989, the house was destroyed by a fire. The second house was built and completed in 1991 located at 812 Wigwam Hollow.
In 1997, Western Illinois University suspended the Kappa Theta Chapter for four years for various reasons. Shortly afterward, national headquarters revoked the charter. The house was sold to the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in August of 2000.
Six years had gone by, and the chapter was ready to recolonize in 2003. The petition was approved by Western Illinois University . Six members were initiated in the Fall of 2003 by the Alpha Sigma Chapter at Bradley University . Those six members were George Chapman, Rob Burtis, William Vara, Macario Viezca, Mike Thorson, and Derek Stephens. Since the recolonization, the Kappa Theta Colony has continued to thrive among the Western Illinois University greek community.
