Don't Believe the Stereotype
I am Craig Tollini, an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and I will be starting my tenth year at WIU in the Fall. I am one of two advisors of Theta Xi Fraternity. I am going to briefly talk about why I decided to be a chapter advisor, what I do for the chapter as an advisor, and how being an advisor has helped me. This is Theta Xi Fraternity from a chapter advisor's view.
I became part of Theta Xi when I was conducting a research project on fraternities at the same time they were looking for an advisor. After some time the brothers of Theta Xi asked me to be their advisor, I accepted in Fall of 2008. Not knowing exactly what to expect as I really only knew the fraternity stereotypes. Anyway, I quickly learned my job as the chapter advisor. I have responsibilities including, communicating between the chapter and our national organization and helping to ensure the Constitution and By-Laws are followed. Assisting the leaders and other members of the chapter to make and enforce their own rules and resolve any problems or conflicts though one of the central goals of the chapter, democratic self-governance.
Before becoming involved, I knew very little about what a fraternity actually was and is, even in my undergraduate years. Although my university did not offer greek life I still was not interested because of the stereotypes associated with them. However, with my research I was very surprised at how the stereotypes of fraternities often do not actually apply to them. After taking on this new job I started to get to know the brothers which has also helped me stay in touch with students here at Western, which I truly believe has allowed a more socially in tune classroom environment .
I also urge anyone undergraduates or parents that are still on the fence about what greek life has to offer please feel free to email me, I'd be glad to answer any and all questions. My contact information can be found here.
